Men's Health Physiotherapy
Have you had a prostatectomy? Did you realise that up to 80% of men that undergo prostate surgery experience Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence (PPI)?
The symptoms of PPI are:
- Urine leakage with activities, such as sitting to standing, walking, or exercising
- Urine leakage with cough, sneeze or laugh
- Urgency – frequently going to the toilet
After prostatectomy, the main control mechanism of your bladder may be impaired. The pelvic floor muscle will need to play a greater role to maintain your bladder control.
Physiotherapists have researched the effectiveness of individualised pelvic floor muscle training to reduce the severity of PPI. Results show that the severity of PPI and the time to restore bladder control are reduced.
In addition, further evidence suggests that pelvic floor training, pre surgery, may also improve bladder control post-prostatecomy.
